Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Foxtrot

Chris really stepped it up in the final last week and delivered an almost perfect Foxtrot, can he improve on that tonight?

Looks to me like there has been some work on the hands, but really should be smiling throughout. Shame about the mistake in the middle.

Ola knows how much the audience like the pivots, so much so that she includes them twice - would have preferred a bit more variety!

Not a bad performance but I wouldn't say it's improved over his final performance and I'm only going to give it an 8 I'm afraid.

Gethin Jones & Flavia Cacahe - American Smooth

So a new partnership for the Christmas Special, how will they perform together?

Doesn't really seem to be much chemistry between them, and I'm finding the performance a little stale, however the final lift drew some excited gasps from Emma's mother and sister.

Not a bad performance, but not as good as the others so far tonight so will have to say 8 I'm afraid.

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - Viennese Waltz

A perfect 40 in Blackpool, let's see if they can recreate that magical dance tonight.

Ali's elegance always suits the mainly slow Ballroom dances.

A little shaky at times but otherwise faultless and I think this could be the first perfect score of the night.

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Quickstep

Perfect marks in the final for their Quickstep makes this a strong contender, though hopefully there'll be some new choreography.

Thought there was a slight slip up in the middle, but otherwise a very good performance, will the judges overlook the lift at the end though?

Technically it seemed perfect but have to knock off a mark for the lift so will give them a 9.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Charlston

Return of the crazy face of Chris Hollins.

This is looking improved over their original Charlston, which definitely bodes well.

A very good performance, a little untidy in places (though I suspect that's the essence of the dance) and I'm going to give it a 9.

Jade Johnson & Ian Waite Tango

After seeing that there's no doubt that Jade was an incredibly strong contender for this title.

My old teacher Mary (Ian's step-mum) choreographed this dance and was gutted when they couldn't perform it on the night.

I feel so sorry for Ian as this was probably his best chance for making it to the final, let's hope he gets someone equally as good next year.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Foxtrot

So, Chris has never been in the dance-off but has also never received a 10 so far in the competition. How is he going to respond to the perfect 50 that Ricky just achieved?

Good to see Chris has decided not to work on his hands and face for the final ;-)

Wait, was that a smile?! That's all you need to do Chris, just smile and it makes a huge improvement.

The dance is a little flat for my liking but not a bad performance, not perfect but could well get a 9 or two.

Up first then is Ricky to bring in the Grand Final.

Looking very good so far. Ricky's head is very much improved over what i've seen in recent weeks, needs to make sure he keeps looking up and doesn't look at the floor when they're apart though.

I would say a faultless performance and I'm going to have to say a 10!

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Argentine Tango

Seconds in and I already feel this could be the best Arentine Tango of the night.

Looks a little unsteady at times though.

However a very good performance and easily worth 9's.

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - American Smooth

A dance that should suit Ali better, although they have chosen quite a fast number.

Not sure about Ali having both hands above her head during her spins, looks a little untidy.

It looks like they've decided to quash any 'are they or aren't they' rumours with those kisses at the end.

A very good performance, not quite perfect for me but i think they may get full marks from the judges.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Argentine Tango

Good to see Chris and Ola starting with true Argentine Tango basics. Needs to make sure he doesn't hold back on the flicks though as they look a little stunted at times.

I preferred their dance to Ali's but I still only an 8 for me.

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Waltz

Personally for me Ricky's Ballroom has always been let down by his strange head positioning during pivots and spins, something he's done since his first dance in week 2 and has never been mentioned.

That opening looked like a lift but I think they'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Straight away though and his opening pivots show the his poor posture in turning situations.

Technically his dancing is great but that top-line really has grated on me since his first week.

I think he'll get 9's, but for me I'd only give it an 8.

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - Argentine Tango

Can Ali pull off the unexpected and actually give us a down and dirty performance?

Incidentally this song they're dancing to is the same one that a couple I choreographed for used in their Christmas party last night, and won!

Hints of passion there, but i'd still like to see a bit more intensity, and it just seems to be lacking a little sharpness.

I'm just not feeling this routine, the most passionate part came in the ending look between them.

Should easily get 8's though.

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Foxtrot

Please Natalie I hope you’ve sorted out Ricky’s odd head movements as they really do grate for me and often it ruins the whole look of the routine.

Significant improvement in the head department, though he has to avoid looking down at the floor.

Can’t see his footwork but a very good performance, not perfect but I think it will get 9’s.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Waltz

A dance that needs elegance and romance, and I think Chris has what it takes to pull off a good one, but let’s see what happens.

I’m not personally happy with his head position, it’s stretched a little oddly but the dance is looking good aside from that, although he really does need to incorporate some shaping in his hands.

A nice Waltz that I think should achieve at least 8’s.

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke - American Smooth

I was really enjoying the start, up until the slip in the spin. She really does have to watch those shoulders too. The dance does look like Anton is throwing her round quite a lot, and I don’t just mean in the lifts!

Started with lots of promise but I don’t think it delivered and I’m only going to give it a 7 I’m afraid.

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - Tango

Another dance where Ali won’t be able to ‘float’ round the floor so will be interesting to see how she copes with the passion and aggression required in this dance.

Slight slip in the spins at the start and they appear to be incorporating rising into the dance at points.

Ali is looking quite unsteady at times.

An ok performance but I wasn’t too impressed so far, will have to say 8.

Competition Viennese Waltz

So the first time that the competitors have been required to actually compete against each other, let's see how they cope with a normal dancing competition scenario.

This will be made difficult by the camera angles, very hard to compare when it keeps jumping around.

For me I still think Ricky's frame is not the best, especially when doing the fleckerl as he has a tendency to lean his head.

Chris' frame also has a bit of a lean to it.

Laila looks a little unstable at times.

For me I would place it:

1. Ali & Brian
2. Natalie & Vincent
3. Laila & Anton
4. Chris & Ola
5. Ricky & Natalie

If Ricky could sort out his top line it wouldn't make me cringe every time he goes into a turn and I'd have marked him a lot higher.

How would you have placed them?

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke - Charlston

Well a dance that requires a major dose of character, shouldn't be a problem for Anton!

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - Charlston

Yet another injury has hit the current series of Strictly, one really has to start wondering if this series really is cursed!

So far Ali appears to be coping with her injured ankle well.

Another energetic performance although the exit from the first lift looked a little messy.

Preferred this performance to Chris' so I'll give it a 9.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Charlston

This week is going to be interesting then - two dances that I've never danced (albeit their elements feature in Quickstep and Jive). How to judge a dance you have no experience of...I'll be in the same boat as Alesha for once!

I know Chris is going for attitude, but I do wish he would keep his mouth shut, or at least do something different than the strange tongue-out look he's got at the moment!

An interesting routine, very bizarre overall. I think Chris has definitely encapsulated the character of the dance.

I found it a strange experience but I'll give him an 8.

The moment of truth, dance off, and result

Will my prediction of a Laila and Ricky dance off pan out?

Bottom three as expected, now who have the public gone for?

Yep Natalie & Vincent are saved by the audience, and Laila and Ricky are in the dance-off.

More importantly it's Erin versus Anton!

If Ricky can perform without making any mistakes then we could have a competition on our hands, otherwise I think he's going home.

Laila still stumbles in the same move near the end, which is a shame, and she looks very uncomforable during the final pivots. But not a bad performance, all down to Ricky now.

Looks like a much improved performance on earlier and I really don't know how to call this one.

I think Ricky has been more consistent, though Laila has scored highly in a few of her dances.

On that basis I think it will be Ricky going home.

Just waiting on Len to confirm whether it's 3 or 4-0...and Len confirms it would've been 4-0.

Do you agree with the outcome from tonight? Look out Natalie and Laila, there's no-one below you now!

Ricky Groves & Erin Boag - Tango

So I didn't expect a comical take on a Paso, let's see if Ricky can keep it serious for the Tango.

Emma's not really 'feeling' Erin's dress this week, and I must admit it does look a little weird.

Just loses a little bit of drive at times and his dropped head makes him look a little unconfident. Seems to be making mistakes but can't tell.

It was an ok performance but I don't think he'll score higher than a 7.

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke - Waltz

Will Laila have recovered from her injury enough to cope with the demands of the rise and fall in the Waltz?

Just needs to make sure she keeps her core strong as still looks a little loose at times.

Shame about the glaring mistake at the end though, I don't think there's any dances this series that she's managed to complete without a mistake!

Even with the mistake, and the posture issues, I think she should achieve 8's.

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - American Smooth

Ricky was worried during the week about having to do the lifts, and I don't blame him! Nothing against Natalie, but lifting anyone completely off the ground is a difficult task.

Ricky's head still concerns me when he's dancing Ballroom, it always seems to be a little tilted, and he needs to make sure he keeps his bum in.

Amazing lift though, I know Kenny Logan did it with Ola, but there's a significant difference in both Kenny and Ricky's muscle mass and the size of Ola and Natalie.

Still room for improvement in Ricky's Ballroom and i'll give him an 8.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Viennese Waltz

Chris has been hit-and-miss this series, let's see how he copes with the tricky Viennese.

Not quite sure that Chris' feet were correct during the slow fleckerl at the start.

Nice pivots, although you could see the tension forming in Chris' shoulders every time he dances them.

A good performance and should get 8's.

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - Foxtrot

Away from the sexy requirements of the Latin Ali should perform a great Foxtrot tonight.

Like the Viennese the other week, Ali looks a little shaky at times but overall another almost faultless performance (a little hard to tell whether she was correctly releasing the toe when moving backward - good old Strictly camera angles!)

Personally I'd give this a 9.

The moment of truth, dance off, and result

I'm expecting Laila to be saved by public vote, and a Natalie Cassidy/Phil Tufnell dance-off - but how have the public voted?

Well that's one of my dance-off possibles saved by the public, could Laila be in trouble this week? Either way I think they'll save her till the bottom three.

As expected!

Out of these two I think Phil will be the one going home, assuming Ricky can make the Viennese a little smoother this time.

A nice performance from Phil & Katya, let's see Ricky's response.

Seems smoother this time, but still too skippy. Not quite as dynamic this time and I think Ricky could be in trouble.

It'll be a close call and I imagine it will be a Len decider tonight.

2-1 to Phil, then Len votes for Ricky so Phil gets sent home, the right decision I feel.

Do you agree with the decision?

Natalie Cassidy & Vincent Simone - Foxtrot

Not too sure on the hair-bow! But should really concentrate on the dancing I suppose.

Not liking the dance to be honest, it's a little un-imaginative and boring and doesn't appear to have much contrast of fast and slow.

Lots of mistakes creeping in and overall a real let down for me. I'd give them 6's.

Ricky Groves & Erin Boag - Viennese Waltz

Another celebrity who's more at home in the ballroom dances. His Viennese American Smooth was very good so I'm expecting good things tonight.

A little skippy, which i'm sure Craig will pick up on, fleckerl wasn't too bad though.

The dance is let down by the skipping as it ruins the overall look, and with only 3 real steps to choose from you do have to perform them well.

I think it should easily achieve 8's.

Phil Tufnell & Katya Virshilas - American Smooth

Phil should be more at home in the ballroom dances, if he can just control his shoulders. The lifts should be interesting to see though.

It's a little frantic for a foxtrot for my liking but his top line is quite good. The lifts were executed well and overall not too bad a performance.

For me it's a 7

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Foxtrot

Foxtrot is the most technically difficult of all the dances and I think lack of confidence could see Chris dancing round with raised shoulders, which would really ruin the look of the dance.

Needs to make sure that when he's moving backwards that he's lifting the toe of the trailing foot off the ground (known as NFR - No Foot Rise).

Shoulder line was actually very good, the dance did seem to lose a bit of its drive before the final pivots though.

Easily 8's though

Judges scores: CRH 8, LG 9, AD 9, BT 8.

Excellent marks and well deserved I feel.

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - Viennese Waltz

Ali really suffered with an injury last week, but this should be very good and could finish top if all goes well.

Ali really does pull off elegance with aplomb, it looks a little skippy at points but excellent nonetheless.

I can't really fault the performance, it looked a little shaky at times but this should really get top marks.

Judges scores: CRH 10, LG 10, AD 10, BT 10.

Fully deserved - do try not to cry though Brian!

Natalie Cassidy & Vincent Simone - Quickstep

Natalie performed a good Jive last week, how is she going to cope with the energy levels required for this week's Quickstep?

Natalie has to control those shoulders, which do raise up at times, and the dance seems to have a very laboured start - though it does pick up after that.

A slight mistake as they recommence from their 'Jive' section in the middle but not bad overall, should achieve 30 again.

Judges marks: CRH 7, LG 8, AD 8, BT 8.

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Tango

With rumours abound this week that Ricky's split with his girlfriend Carley Stenson was due to his 'close' relationship with Natalie Lowe, this could be a passionate Tango indeed!

Ricky Whittle - Tango

The dance certainly starts with a lot of passion and energy, though it does look quite sloppy at times - is this nerves from having gone first?

Quite a few mistakes creeping in near the end, not like Ricky at all. That's a real shame as it should've been a lot higher but i'm expecting 8's because of all the mistakes.

Judges scores: CRH 8, LG 9, AD 9, BT 9

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Quickstep

I hope Natalie has worked on Ricky's frame, as that's the one part of his dancing that I've felt has been particularly lacking.

An energetic performance and hard to fault at times (though he needs to ensure he brings the feet closer together during the scatter chasses).

I really found it hard to fault and this could see a perfect score...

Phil Tufnell & Katya Virshilas - Tango

A dance that requires passion and control, and absolutely no hip rolling!!! Can Phil cope...

Phil needs to keep the bum in, it does appear to be protruding throughout, and this is also resulting in a slight hunched over frame.

An ok performance that should easily get 7's.

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke - Viennese Waltz

Back to ballroom, and Anton's forte, we should see significant improvement this week

The training mid-week for this looked excellent, let's hope she can perform tonight.

There's something just not quite right with her frame, it doesn't look like she's quite standing up from her core, which is resulting in a slight chin protusion.

That slip right in front of the judges won't do them any favours.

Anton felt this had the potential to be 10's, but it hasn't quite lived up to it on the night, could well get 8's though.

Jade Johnson & Ian Waite - Foxtrot

The Foxtrot is a slow and elegant dance and, like most ballroom dances, tends to suit the taller couples - and these two are certainly both tall!

For an athlete Jade does manage to pull off elegant quite well. A little bit of gapping between them , Jade needs to slow down when she's the one going backward and her left shoulder just has a tendency to pop up at times.

A very good performance however and could achieve 9's tonight.

Craig Kelly & Flavia Cacace - Waltz

Craig is hoping to make it to Blackpool next week, but has thus far not managed to impress the judges with his attempts - will the Waltz be any better?

Craig's frame is vastly improved on his previous attempts at ballroom, and actually is one of the best frames I've seen from any of the celebrity males this year.

Ok the dance lost it in places but I think it's his best dance so far.

He should achieve 7's.

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - American Smooth

I expected Ali to struggle with the Jive last week and unfortunately was proved correct. Back to Ballroom should see Ali return to form.

Impressive leg lift in the middle of the routine, shame that there just appears to be a few issues occurring throughout the routine.

Definitely back on track, just a shame that a few errors appeared to creep in, should be looking at 8's though.

Natalie Cassidy & Vincent Simone - American Smooth

So an American Smooth with no lifts...that's a first for Strictly. How will it fair with the judges?

Natalie needs to relax the shoulders and make sure she is leaning away from Vincent as it does ruin the top line look at the moment.

A nice routine obviously lacking in the wow factor due to no lifts, and just felt a little lacklustre.

I think it should get 7's though.

Ricky Groves & Erin Boag - American Smooth

Ricky and Erin have decided to choose a Viennese Waltz as their American Smooth dance and from the training videos I think that could prove to be a good choice.

Shame he was out of time at the start there as they came together. An excellent performance, with a cheeky bit of Quickstep thrown in for good measure. Looked a little uncomfortable during the second lift however.

Should comfortably get 8's.

Zoe Lucker & James Jordan - American Smooth

A surprise dance-off competitor last week, this has really shown all the celebrities that you're never really safe if the public don't vote for you.

A very elegant performance really let down by the mistakes at the end of the routine. However I think this will easily get 8's.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - American Smooth

Although I consider the Foxtrot to be the hardest of the ballroom dances, American Smooth is another thing entirely, due to the introduction of lifts.

The American Smooth is the application of a bit of Hollywood glitz and glamour to any of the five ballroom dances: the Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep or Viennese Waltz. To bring in a semblance of rules for Strictly the couples are limited to two lifts in their routine.

Personally I would say that the male celebrities have the harder job due to being the ones that have to actually lift their partner.

It will be interesting to see how Chris copes with the technique involved.

I still think Chris has good hands, though they are a bit splayed at times, especially when he has his hand on Ola's back.

This is shaping up to be a very good performance and some well executed lifts. Couldn't see his footwork but this could well be 9's.

Phil Tufnell & Katya Virshilas - Viennese Waltz

This was looking very good, if a little boppy in training...

Should easily get the 7's I thought it would though.

Thought training for the Viennese looked quite good, though I've only predicted 7's.

Well this could definitely give Jade a run for her money, though does appear to lost balance during the reverse fleckles.

An impressive performance, almost as good as Jade's but I don't think quite as good, should get some 9's but I think it'll be a point behind Jade.

Zoe Lucker & James Jordan - Jive

Another celeb that I've been waiting to see perform a fast Latin dance. I thought training looked good, let's hope the nerves don't get the better of her.

I think she needs to take slightly smaller back steps, and another celeb who doesn't keep the toes down when flicking.

It's a little lacklustre for my liking, looks like a collection of moves rather than a continuous routine.

Pretty sure James dropped Zoe a little early at the end there.

Think it will be the 7's I predicted.

Nowhere near as smooth as it needs to be, though not necessarily a bad performance. Better than the 5's I predicted but I'm seeing 5-6's.

The dance off!

Lynda up first:

Does seem a bit livelier, why does Lynda save the better performances for the dance-off?!

I still don't think it has enough drive however, and just as I was about to say how good it was to see her not make the same mistake again, she mucks up the ending. Shame.

Now for Craig:

A little bit John Wayne in places (some of my male students might recognise that phrase!)

Frame does look better this time round.

Again I think a better performance than during the show.

This is really going to be a hard one to call but I think they will say that Craig has more potential.

Ricky Groves & Erin Boag - Foxtrot

Can the Strictly comedian pull off a serious Foxtrot, well if he can sort out that frame he might have a chance.

The high shoulders do ruin the look, and contribute to the unplanned tilt in the spins.

Shoulders are getting higher as the dance progresses, and that's such a shame.

A nice Foxtrot, ignoring the frame, but I think it'll be the 6's I predicted from the training videos.

Craig Kelly & Flavia Cacace - Foxtrot

Craig had a really tough time last week so let's hope he remembers the whole routine this week, and keep that frame strong!

Frame is definitely improved, though the left arm is moving around far too much, it should stay in position throughout the dance.

Would help with balance in the spins and turns if he stopped looking at Flavia.

A little coarse and stiff in parts, but a nice performance. Think it will be 6's.

Will be interesting to see if the midweek publicity affects how the public vote, but let's hope the performance is what people focus on.

I want to see a 9's performance here guys!

Foxtrot is definitely my favourite dance and this is the best Foxtrot so far (not surprising considering Anton is the Ballroom expert professional on the show.

Can't quite tell if there wasn't a slight mistake there or not, and Laila still needs to watch her shoulders.

Without seeing the feet I still think this should achieve 9's.

Joe Calzaghe & Kristina Rihanoff - Foxtrot

Joe has been consistently stuck to the bottom of the leaderboard, and I don't expect things to change tonight I'm afraid and I still think he'll struggle to achieve 5's.

Looks good in a tux though, and this is one of my favourite songs (albeit the Muse version!)

Wooden start with the clicking, and needs to stick his bum in as this is causing him to hunch over Kristina.

Better than his Tango in week one, but still mostly lacking in drive and excitement. I'm thinking 5's though.

Jo Wood & Brendan Cole - Foxtrot

So Jo is trying the most technical ballroom dance and I'm not expecting much (predicted 5's earlier), let's hope she proves me wrong.

Mistakes evident right from the start and she needs to keep the head up and lift from her chest.

She seems to save the really obvious mistakes for right in front of the judges unfortunately.

A passable attempt but I think Craig is going to be harsh again. Sticking with my 5's.

Predicted 7's based on training but this performance is looking a little wooden and bumpy, Foxtrot should move gracefully and smoothly across the floor.

A little slip up near the end didn't help.

A 'nice' performance but a little uninspiring I felt. Looking at 6's.

Assuming she can keep the footwork on track I predicted an 8 earlier.

Can't really see the footwork, but top half is looking good, though lifts the left arm every now and then which spoils the look.

Overall a very good start and still think this will be 8's

Training updates - Salsa and Foxtrot

In advance of tonights show I've looked at the training updates and my comments and predictions follow.

The contestants have been allocated either a sultry Salsa, or the elegant Foxtrot.

Salsa normally involves fast complicated moves with lots of hip movement, whilst the Foxtrot is a slow elegant dance that should float across the floor.

Both are quite difficult dances to master but I've always considered the Foxtrot to be the most difficult dance technically.

So how is their training coming along?

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Salsa

Need to keep the head up Chris, and the shoulders down. Having seen Chris' Rumba a couple of weeks ago I think this could be good, if he can just keep the performance element there.

For me though I think he could have another Quickstep moment, i.e. head down and just kicking like crazy! So I'm predicting 6-7.

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - Salsa

Salsa is Brian's forte so this should be good, if Ali can cope with the fast and intricate movements.

We've seen Ali perform two Ballroom, and one Latin dance so far. Ballroom is generally easier for the female celebrities and Ali also excelled in the slow Rumba, but how is she finding the faster Salsa?

I think this will be 7's

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Salsa

Ricky is fast becoming the series favourite, but is it too much too soon?

Needs to watching the arm that isn't being used and make sure that it's not just left hanging.

This is definitely a dance that could really show off Ricky's abilities, and word has it that Ricky has previously had Salsa lessons.

Just like his Paso last week, I think Ricky will really perform this well but I'm seeing 8's not 9's.

Jade Johnson & Ian Waite - Salsa

Jade injured herself in training midweek so it will be interesting to see how their routine has had to be adapted.

Definitely really good hip action and attitude, even if she does lack confidence. I'm predicting 8's for this

Natalie Cassidy & Vincent Simone - Salsa

Natalie showed in her Cha Cha that she's not afraid to wiggle her hips, let's see if she brings that confidence to the Salsa.

Looking at the training their Salsa is starting to shape up nicely and I think this will be 7's

Phil Tufnell & Katya Virshilas - Salsa

Phil had keyhole surgery on his knee this week, and I'm sure his recovery has seriously affected their available practice time. Let's hope for Phil's sake that his knee can hold up under the stress of performing a Salsa, he'd have been better off with Foxtrot.

Not looking good so far on the knee front, but most of the routine is looking pretty good. Unfortunately the effect of that knee is going to result in 6's.

Ricky Groves & Erin Boag - Foxtrot

Strictly's funny man returns after an impressive Paso, let's see if he can keep those shoulders down in the Foxtrot.

Really needs to avoid shrugging throughout the dance, if he can sort that then could be looking at 7's, but realistically I think it'll be 6's

Jo Wood & Brendan Cole - Foxtrot

Jo has struggled with the dances so far in the competition and I think this'll be another dance she struggles with as the ladies footwork is especially difficult in the Foxtrot.

Based on her previous performances she'll struggle to make 5's

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke - Foxtrot

What a turbulent week these two will have had! Laila has asked that the events of a couple of weeks ago be put behind them, but how will the public vote?

One of Anton's strongest dances and it looks like Laila's picked it up excellently.

Could be their best dance yet, and the best of the night, 8-9.

Joe Calzaghe & Kristina Rihanoff - Foxtrot

I can't work out which of the two dances would've been better for Joe, but I think probably the Foxtrot as there's zero hip action required!

Another dance where I think Joe will struggle to maintain his frame, and it looks like there are some issues with the relationship in training.

Sorry Joe but looks like you'll struggle to get 5's

Craig Kelly & Flavia Cacace - Foxtrot

Craig's grame is looking improved, though haven't seen enough of the dance out of practice hold.

I'm saying 6-7.

Lynda Bellingham & Darren Bennett - Foxtrot

Definitely lucky to have not been given the Salsa, let's see what she can do with the Foxtrot.

Looking very nice, though I can't see her footwork, definitely a dance best suited to Lynda's personality and style.

Could well be 7's.

Zoe Lucker & James Jordan - Foxtrot

If Zoe copes with the footwork this could be a really good Foxtrot, Zoe has an elegance when she dances that will really complement the Foxtrot.

If all goes to plan this will be 8's.

So my prediction is for Laila to be top, and Joe still rooted to the bottom of the table. Do you agree?

Leaderboard

Leaderboard is as follows:

1. 35 points - Ricky & Natalie
2. 32 points - Ali & Brian
3. 31 points - Zoe & James
4. 31 points - Jade & Ian
5. 30 points - Laila & Anton
6. 29 points - Ricky & Erin
7. 28 points - Natalie & Vincent
8. 25 points - Lynda & Darren
9. 24 points - Phil & Katya
10. 23 points - Chris & Ola
11. 21 points - Craig & Flavia
12. 20 points - Rav & Aliona
13. 20 points - Jo & Brendan
14. 19 points - Joe & Kristina

Given that Jo and Joe have both been saved by the audience from being in the bottom two it's fair to say that the same might happen this week.

This could mean that Rav and Craig both end up in the bottom two again, and I can't call it yet.

What's everyone elses viewpoint?

Phil Tufnell & Katya Virshilas - Quickstep

So Phil has a knee problem and is going in for surgery tomorrow, let's see how it affects this quick and high-impact dance.

I wonder if Katya had to adjust the routine after Phil's knee diagnosis?

Nice start though needs to relax the shoulders and they lose connection just as they're starting the scatter chasses.

A few mistakes but all round a nice Quickstep, but 6-7 for me.

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke - Quickstep

Anton is the only actual Ballroom professional in the males so this should be good.

With Anton's charm, and Laila's looks this could be the first time he makes it to the final, but let's get through the first couple of months eh Anton!

A couple of mistakes there, and for me the dance is lacking drive and energy. Laila needs to have more tension in her upper body.

Think this should be solid 7's though.

Jade Johnson & Ian Waite - Quickstep

A fast dance which could suit Jade's athleticism, even if it ends up wearing Ian out!

Jade looks a little uncomfortable during the jump from the stage, and is a little behind at the start of the next jump section.

Needs to relax the shoulders and make sure she isn't pushing the head forward.

Certainly full of energy but I think 6-7

Craig Kelly & Flavia Cacace - Quickstep

Problems with his arm lines last week could be recreated in this fast and difficult dance.

Not too sure on Flavia's dress but an energetic start, though Craig needs to keep his shoulders down.

The worst thing about Quickstep is how noticeable it is when you jump and your partner doesn't, unfortunately Craig's errors are very noticeable.

Top line still requires a lot of work and I think this could be 5's

Rav Wilding & Aliona Vilani - Quickstep

Rav's a big man and I do think he may struggle with the Quickstep, at least at making it look effortless!

Nice line at the start, shame about the slip and the Charlstons looked slightly off in the feet.

Huge gap between them meaning that they're not really together throughout the dance. Rav seems to be making quite a few mistakes and he would've been lucky to not have to hear from Craig.

4-5's

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Quickstep

Another top dancer from a fortnight ago, fast dances normally suit shorter competitors so will be interesting to see how this shapes up.

Keep the head up Chris at the start, but good hands as always (contrary to Len's criticism...!

Looks a little flat and laboured and appears to be a lack of connection between them, probably due to Chris' bum being a little stuck out.

I'm afraid I think this will only be a 6.

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - Quickstep

Very good Waltz last time they danced ballroom and should have the elegance to pull off a good quickstep.

Nice classic music choice.

Floaty and elegant beginning.

Good movement and control, though the top line looks a little nervous and she looks almost like she's leaning.

Shaming about the slight mistake there.

Fast and accurate footwork mainly , needs to stand up a little more at times.

7-8

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Waltz

Full of promise with my initial thought being 7-8.

...

Had to watch getting too carried away with moving his head around, and a real shame with that slip but I still think he'll get 7's

Jo Wood & Brendan Cole - Tango

Well done Phil, that'll teach anyone that compared you to John Sergeant (though I seem to recall he did have a very good first Waltz too!)

...

6 predicted...

...

A poor start but quickly recovered.  Looking good for a while, but a bit skippy later on and lacks some control.  Going to be 5's, maybe a 6.

Phil Tufnell & Katya Virshilas - Waltz

Looks like they've forgiven the obvious mistake, and the marks are in line with the performance.

...

Depending on nerves this looked good in training and I predicted a 6-7.

Now that's some Brylcreemed hair!

Nice Waltz performance, a slight slip unfortunately right in front of the judges, and needs to make sure that the toe is pointed out during lines, but overall a good performance.

Think 6-7 still (though more towards 7)

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke - Tango

From the training videos I had this down as an 8, so will be interesting to see if they live up to the hype.

Not sure if Anton should have called all his old partners rubbish (I seem to recall he did alright with Lesley Garrett).

...

Needs to put the chin up just a bit, it's making the top line look soft, maybe stand up a bit more from the rib-cage.

Looking good however but a real shame about that mistake in not going to promenade (made worse by Anton not carrying on!)

That's really let down a good performance and i think it'll be 6-7

Richard Dunwoody & Lilia Kopylova - Waltz

What was that face for Bruno?  Don't agree with Alesha's marks?  Wouldn't be surprised if that's not discussed in the papers this week.

...

Predicted 5-6, but didn't know that existing injuries prevented him having a proper frame, will be interesting to see if the judges take that into account.

Must, must, must go forward on a heel on the first step Richard, haven't seen one yet and I guarantee that Len will pick up on that.

Shame about the frame as it's difficult to judge when the shoulder line ruins the look.  With all those toe leads I think it'll be 5's.

Craig Kelly & Flavia Cacace - Tango

Always good to insult the judges before they give their marks James!  Doesn't look like it affected Len's mark though.

...

So I predicted a 6 for these guys earlier, let's see what happens.  I hope he's worked on his upper line.

So a slight Paso opening  followed by a bit of stomping, needs to be a little bit softer in the feet and unfortunately the top line is a little hunched over Flavia.

I would say a 5-6.

Zoe Lucker & James Jordan - Waltz

So judges agree with me on the first dance of the night, bodes well for the rest of them!

...

Training for the Waltz looked really good during the week so bodes well for tonight, I predicted a 7-8 earlier on tonight so will be interesting if they live up to it.

...

Really elegant start, slight slip on a chasse after the running spin but the rest is looking good, needs to stop moving the left arm so much when in hold.

Very good Waltz and i'd be surprised if it wasn't 8's.

Natalie Cassidy & Vincent Simone - Tango

Vincent's dance of choice, should be good so long as Natalie watches those shoulders and arms.

...

Uncomfortable start with the hand on the back of the neck but not looking bad now, though she does look a little soft up top (and I mean her frame!!!)

Little bit jerky at times.

I'm going to say a 6.

Training updates

So the night of the new celebrity competitors is almost upon us, and last night's It Takes Two had training updates, how is their training coming along?

Phil Tufnell & Katya Virshilas
Waltz - Needs to relax the shoulders, just holding his arms a little high (arms should be a slight incline down from the shoulder). Overall doesn't look too bad, if nerves don't get the better this could be a 6-7.

Cha Cha - Could potentially give Ricky Groves a run for his money...? If i'm honest I think Phil will only manage a 6 at best.

Zoe Lucker & James Jordan
Waltz - Looks elegant (when not falling over!). Definitely going to give Ali's Waltz a run for her money.  Could be a 7-8.

Rumba - Looks quite good, so long as Zoe can ignore her nerves surrounding the sensual side of the dance.  Another 7-8.

Jo Wood & Brendan Cole
Tango -  Needs to keep chin up, still closing up and looking at the floor.  Brendan always dances with passion so let's hope Jo can keep up.  Think the nerves might get the better of her though and predicting a 6.

Rumba -  A couple of nice moments but haven't seen enough of the dance to truly judge, think another 6.

Richard Dunwoody & Lilia Kopylova
Waltz - Needs to relax the shoulders, the frame is just there for show and should be kept uniform and relaxed. 5-6.

Cha Cha -  Oh dear, I don't think the Cha Cha is going to be Richards thing, looks uncomfortable and again another 5-6.

Craig Kelly & Flavia Cacace
Tango - Flavia's speciality is the Argentine Tango and Ballroom Tango is a close cousin so hopefully something good can be created here.  Right shoulder should not be raised during lines, needs to watch this. Predicting a 6.

Rumba - Hips look a little forced at times, probably going to be a 6.

Tango - Flavia's partner Vincent is also a specialist in Tango, coupled with Natalie's passion for dancing and her acting abilities, this should be good.  Haven't seen enough of the dancing but i'm predicting a 6-7.

Cha Cha - Natalie definitely doesn't appear to be shy about moving around in the Cha Cha but does need to make her chasse a little softer.  Should be a lively 7.

Waltz - Looking really good, though still needs to watch those shoulders and try and keep level. Going to say a 7-8.

Rumba - Has natural rhythm and looks quite good, a 7 easily if he pulls it off on the night.

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke
Tango -  So finally Anton get's a younger celebrity and ,some might say, his actual real chance to win.  Can't see the feet but this could be the best dance of the night, 8.

Cha Cha - Nice hip action and looking good, think that'll be a 7.

Don't forget that our blog will be a little late tonight due to our regular Friday night practice session, but don't worry i'll be watching it, and commenting, as soon as I get home so check back after midnight!

Joe Calzaghe & Kristina Rihanoff

So the pre-show favourite is up next, let's see if the bookie's were right.

...

I feel for the judges, trying to type this and still watch the dancing is quite a feat!

...

Needs to stand up a little straighter, shouldn't be leaning forward.  Personally a think it lacks an energy, there should be more of a slow and quick contrast.

5-6

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna

Not a fan of the lounge jacket as opposed to tails (except for Tango where I thnk it works quite well) but i'm here to comment on the dancing, not the dress sense!

...

Nice so far bar one little slip up.  Well performed, floaty and elegant.  Little bit jumpy at the start.

Another 7

So it appears I am being too kind!

...

So time to put my stricter (see what I did there!) hat on.

...

If you're going to pick the foot up and flick, make sure you definitely do all three, and try not to become half hearted.

...

I bet getting her dress snagged hasn't helped the nerves, thank God she managed to shake it off.

...

A solid performance overall but based on scores so far i'm saying a 6.

Martina Hingis & Matthew Cutler

I'd forgotten about using hoops when I was younger, might have to consider it for a couple of the private lessons...

...

Again just need to relax the left shoulder slightly, though not as pronounced as Jade's.

Nice movement but something's lacking, think she needs to stand up a bit straighter, maybe lift from the rib cage.

Think this'll be a 7

Jade Johnson & Ian Waite

I should admit now that I used to have lessons from Ian so I am secretely supporting him and Jade, but i'll try and be objective!

...

That's right ladies - the man i'm afraid is always in charge on the dancefloor!

....

First of the female contestants and looking promising if a little unsure on her feet.

Needs to drop and relax the left shoulder though.

Going out on a limb and saying 7, let's hope I start to get them right before I embarass myself much more!

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan

Ok so it seems I was a bit too generous for the first week!

I get nervous everytime we start a new dance course so I'm sure Chris is sweating profusely!

Here goes:

Powerful though a little stompy and flat footed, think this will be another 5/6 though probably nearer 6.

Ricky Groves & Erin Boag

Maybe i'll have a go at predicting scores as well!

This promises to be good - Erin being a ballroom specialist and all!

Ricky - relax those shoulders!!!

Quite a nice slow routine and doesn't look bad at all, though saw the odd misplaced heel.

Overall I think a 7...let's see if they agree with me...
