Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Foxtrot

Chris really stepped it up in the final last week and delivered an almost perfect Foxtrot, can he improve on that tonight?

Looks to me like there has been some work on the hands, but really should be smiling throughout. Shame about the mistake in the middle.

Ola knows how much the audience like the pivots, so much so that she includes them twice - would have preferred a bit more variety!

Not a bad performance but I wouldn't say it's improved over his final performance and I'm only going to give it an 8 I'm afraid.

Comments from Chris and Ricky, and Christmas line-up.

In one of the most nail biting finals ever seen on Strictly Come Dancing, sports presenter Chris Hollins was voted Strictly Come Dancing Champion 2009 battling it out in a dramatic grand final against Hollyoaks actor Ricky Whittle.

On winning the competition with his professional partner Ola Jordan, Chris said:

‘I’d just love to thank everyone so much especially you two (Ricky and Natalie) you’ve made it a wonderful final, a very wonderful final. I’d love to thank all our family and friends, our loved ones because without you we wouldn’t have been able to do half the training, and I’d also like to thank all our fellow professionals, they are so generous with their time they are absolutely brilliant! And I’ve got to say last, and definitely not least, little Ola chops - thank you so much for believing in me all the way along, I did test you a little bit, the jive and the quickstep come to mind! Thank you so much you lovely little girl.’

Ola Jordan said of lifting the coveted Glitterball trophy: ‘I just want to say you’ve been the best partner, you’ve been a dream to work with – thank you so much because that experience was fantastic for me.’

Runner up Ricky Whittle said of his Strictly experience:

‘I’ve had an absolutely amazing time; I’ve had the time of my life. I want to thank all of our supporters firstly for getting us here and getting this far – we’ve had a great time and the opportunity to dance on the biggest show out there in Great Britain. I’m going to keep dancing. I want to say thank you to a lot of people, my family here at Strictly, everyone back on Hollyoaks who helped us out – the press team, Vicky, Rachel, Lucy, Anne. Natalie (Lowe) who has been absolutely amazing! My Mum and Dad who are here, my friends, my family.’

In the climax to a thrilling seventh series, both couples performed their highest scoring Ballroom and Latin dances plus a group Lindy Hop and a ‘no holds barred’ show dance in a bid to be titled Strictly champion 2009.

There was a special performance by Strictly’s very own Bruce Forsyth and Alesha Dixon, singing a sparkling rendition of ‘Something’s Gotta Give’.

The final also saw the return of many of this series’ eliminated couples who took to the floor one final time, performing their most memorable dance from the show.

In a poignant moment, athlete Jade Johnson who was forced to withdraw from the competition because of injury, returned to the dance floor with her professional partner Ian Waite to dance the Tango – the fateful dance they never got to perform in the live show.

As an added treat, last years finalists, singer Rachel Stevens and model & presenter Lisa Snowden paired up with their professional partners from last series; Brendan Cole and Vincent Simone to dance a Cha Cha/Tango to ‘Sister’s are doin’ it for themselves’ by Aretha Franklin/The Eurhythmics. As one final Brucie bonus Strictly Professional dancers Kristina Rihanoff and Brian Fortuna dazzled the audience with a magnificent Cha Cha Cha to Lady Gaga’s ‘Just dance’.

Strictly Come Dancing returns for a one off festive Christmas special, featuring previous celebrities’ Rachel Stevens, Austin Healey and Gethin Jones plus this year’s semi finalists Ali Bastian, Ricky Whittle and 2009 Strictly Champion Chris Hollins. Tune in BBC One 7.00pm Christmas Day.

The moment of truth!

Team C'Ola or Ricky & Natalie...

I think it'll be Chris and Ola due to the phenomenal public support they've had over the whole series - and that confirms it.

Congratulations Chris, you've definitely been the most entertaining couple (once Ricky Groves left anyway).

I agree with the result, but how about you?

Final Leaderboard

Wow four dances later, and only 4 points separating our two finalists:

1. Ricky & Natalie...50...43...48...49...Total 190 points
2. Chris & Ola...46...44...50...46...Total 186 points

A lot closer than I think many people would have predicted, but Chris definitely deserves to be that close to Ricky.

Although Ricky is, on the whole, the better dancer I do think Chris just has the most entertaining personality and I really do think he'll win this one.

But you're the public, what do you think, who are you voting for?

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Showdance

Now I predicted that Ricky may outperform Chris in this dance, but not having seen either this will be an interesting contest.

That answers my question about whether Chris will be able to lift Ola above his head as well as Ricky!

Needs to keep his head up, and looks a little off in the Cha Cha sections but the Jive looks good, and what a one-handed lift there from Chris.

The judges looked a little scared there at the end as Chris jumps on their desk.

As ever Chris is the consumate entertainer, a little bit sloppy in places but some amazing lifts (based on my expectations!).

I'd like to give it a 9.5.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Charlston

Return of the crazy face of Chris Hollins.

This is looking improved over their original Charlston, which definitely bodes well.

A very good performance, a little untidy in places (though I suspect that's the essence of the dance) and I'm going to give it a 9.

Leaderboard

So after two dances the Leaderboard is as follows:

1. Ricky & Natalie...50...43...Total 93 points
2. Chris & Ola...46...44...Total 90 points

Not unsurprising that Ricky is top, though Chris is catching up after getting one more point from Dary than Ricky in the Lindyhop.

Both couple's Lindyhop

Out of the two of them I'd say in advance that Chris could well outperform Ricky in this dance - on a personality basis anyway!

Little stumble at the start from Ricky there. Chris does need to keep his head up though.

However Ricky can definitely lift Natalie easily over his head...up until that spin over the head.

Is it my imagination though or are Ricky and Natalie having more individual dance moments in the choreography?

An entertaining routine, shame Ricky very nearly had a disastrous drop.

It's difficult to compare between the two as Ricky and Natalie's routine appeared to have more content to it, and Chris did have the odd timing issue.

I'd give Chris and 8 and Ricky a 9 (though I might have to go back and count the on-screen couple-solos for both of them)!

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Foxtrot

So, Chris has never been in the dance-off but has also never received a 10 so far in the competition. How is he going to respond to the perfect 50 that Ricky just achieved?

Good to see Chris has decided not to work on his hands and face for the final ;-)

Wait, was that a smile?! That's all you need to do Chris, just smile and it makes a huge improvement.

The dance is a little flat for my liking but not a bad performance, not perfect but could well get a 9 or two.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Argentine Tango

Good to see Chris and Ola starting with true Argentine Tango basics. Needs to make sure he doesn't hold back on the flicks though as they look a little stunted at times.

I preferred their dance to Ali's but I still only an 8 for me.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Rumba

I personally really liked Chris' Rumba back in his first week but there was still significant room for improvement, let's hope 10/11 weeks on has seen that improvement realised!

At times Chris' hands look really good, at others they are just stuck out, but thankfuly mainly there is some shaping there.

I'd like to see more hip action though, to match the sheer amount of chest on show.

He certainly acted a good Rumba, could still do with improvement though. I'd give him an 8.

Leaderboard

Final leaderboard is as follows:

1 95 points - Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe
2 86 points - Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna
3 80 points - Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan
4 59 points - Laila Rouass & Anton Du Beke

I predicted to Emma last night that it would be a Laila and Ricky dance-off, but I’m going to change that to Ali & Laila as both have really underperformed tonight for my liking, and I think Chris and Ricky will have more (mostly female!) support.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Samba

Another Samba tonight, Ali scored well earlier on and it’ll be difficult to have such a direct comparison to her.

I think Bruno might mention the stamping jump at the start, and Chris’ mouth is making a comeback.

His hips are a little lacking but it’s a very good performance and I’ll give it an 8.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Waltz

A dance that needs elegance and romance, and I think Chris has what it takes to pull off a good one, but let’s see what happens.

I’m not personally happy with his head position, it’s stretched a little oddly but the dance is looking good aside from that, although he really does need to incorporate some shaping in his hands.

A nice Waltz that I think should achieve at least 8’s.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Charlston

This week is going to be interesting then - two dances that I've never danced (albeit their elements feature in Quickstep and Jive). How to judge a dance you have no experience of...I'll be in the same boat as Alesha for once!

I know Chris is going for attitude, but I do wish he would keep his mouth shut, or at least do something different than the strange tongue-out look he's got at the moment!

An interesting routine, very bizarre overall. I think Chris has definitely encapsulated the character of the dance.

I found it a strange experience but I'll give him an 8.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Viennese Waltz

Chris has been hit-and-miss this series, let's see how he copes with the tricky Viennese.

Not quite sure that Chris' feet were correct during the slow fleckerl at the start.

Nice pivots, although you could see the tension forming in Chris' shoulders every time he dances them.

A good performance and should get 8's.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Paso Doble

So Chris gave his best performance last week, can he keep it up with the Paso this week?

Not sure on the facial expressions, but definitely an aggressive attacking attitude. I don't personally like all the jumping stamps but the ending was very good and generally very good technique throughout.

Easily 8's, maybe even a 9 or two.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Foxtrot

Foxtrot is the most technically difficult of all the dances and I think lack of confidence could see Chris dancing round with raised shoulders, which would really ruin the look of the dance.

Needs to make sure that when he's moving backwards that he's lifting the toe of the trailing foot off the ground (known as NFR - No Foot Rise).

Shoulder line was actually very good, the dance did seem to lose a bit of its drive before the final pivots though.

Easily 8's though

Judges scores: CRH 8, LG 9, AD 9, BT 8.

Excellent marks and well deserved I feel.

Leaderboard

Leaderboard is as follows:

1. 39 points - Ricky & Natalie
2. 35 points - Jade & Ian
3. 33 points - Ali & Brian
4. 33 points - Laila & Anton
5. 32 points - Zoe & James
6. 30 points - Natalie & Vincent
7. 30 points - Phil & Katya
8. 29 points - Chris & Ola
9. 24 points - Craig & Flavia
10. 24 points - Ricky & Erin

For the most part I found this to be quite a disappointing week, though Ricky was fully deserving of the 10's he received - as I said in my critique it was incredibly difficult to find any fault.

I feel a lot of the celebrities have stagnated in recent weeks and will need to seriously improve if they have any hope of getting further.

Each week this bottom two gets harder to call but I'm going to go out on a limb and say Chris Hollins and Natalie Cassidy in the bottom two (I just think there'll be more public support for the other three near the bottom)

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Cha Cha

Fast and cheeky, this could make or break Chris.

A bit too stompy throughout, needs to be softer and push through the floor, and Craig is definitely going to mention the 'banana' hands (as Emma's just described them!), he needs to make sure there is a some shaping in his hands.

Another round of 7's I would say.

Leaderboard

Leaderboard this week is as follows:

1. 37 points - Ali & Brian
2. 33 points - Zoe & James
3. 32 points - Jade & Ian
3. 32 points - Ricky & Natalie
5. 29 points - Ricky & Erin
5. 29 points - Natalie & Vincent
7. 28 points - Chris & Ola
7. 28 points - Laila & Anton
9. 25 points - Phil & Katya
10. 18 points - Craig & Flavia
11. 14 points - Jo & Brendan

I don't think there was much between Zoe and Ali tonight and I don't think Ali was 4 points better than Zoe, but still think that top spot is accurate - shame Zoe had those couple of slips. Also still surprised that Chris is so far down the table...

The bottom of the table looks as expected and I do think this week will see the bottom two in the dance-off, with Jo likely to be the one to go.

How would you have scored it?

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - American Smooth

Although I consider the Foxtrot to be the hardest of the ballroom dances, American Smooth is another thing entirely, due to the introduction of lifts.

The American Smooth is the application of a bit of Hollywood glitz and glamour to any of the five ballroom dances: the Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep or Viennese Waltz. To bring in a semblance of rules for Strictly the couples are limited to two lifts in their routine.

Personally I would say that the male celebrities have the harder job due to being the ones that have to actually lift their partner.

It will be interesting to see how Chris copes with the technique involved.

I still think Chris has good hands, though they are a bit splayed at times, especially when he has his hand on Ola's back.

This is shaping up to be a very good performance and some well executed lifts. Couldn't see his footwork but this could well be 9's.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Jive

Another week, and another metre of clothing removed from Ola's outfit!

Best start for a Jive tonight...until the actual Jive dancing started - needs to keep his head up a little bit more and be a bit 'tighter' with his chasse and rock motion.

Looks very puffed out by the end of the dance.

6's with maybe a 7...

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Salsa

Looked a little uncomfortable in training, let's see if Chris can pull it off on the night, predicted 6-7 earlier.

Really should lower those shoulders, I know the feeling he's trying to create, but it doesn't quite look right.

Slightly off on the turns but lots of hip action, does look a little forced at times.

Needs to avoid spreading all the fingers on his hands, at least have some shape there.

Overall a solid performance and should get 7's.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Quickstep

Another top dancer from a fortnight ago, fast dances normally suit shorter competitors so will be interesting to see how this shapes up.

Keep the head up Chris at the start, but good hands as always (contrary to Len's criticism...!

Looks a little flat and laboured and appears to be a lack of connection between them, probably due to Chris' bum being a little stuck out.

I'm afraid I think this will only be a 6.

Round-up and group Jackson tribute

Personally wouldn't have scored it as high as that, felt there were a few frame issues but no matter, the leaderboard is about right.

...

Chris Hollins showing that he really does have some surprising potential, Joe unfortunately not so much and Ricky is still entertaining.  Lynda giving it her all!

Good question

After receiving the following comment on one of my previous posts, I felt it deserved a post of its own:

Hi Antony. One question after Saturday. Why did Len criticise Chris Hollins' hand movement for the New York in the rumba?

He said that for men, spreading the fingers and pointing the middle one down is "not a good look" and that they should keep the outer 3 digits bandaged together.

But that is how you teach and obviously Ola as well, since she took the blame for this on the show, so I'd be interested in your reaction ...

Thanks, Maggie

Personally I learnt the middle finger down, I teach guys to hold the middle two down – I don’t like the look of the three fingers together.

The Walter Laird technique book shows the middle finger down in the pictures, but there is no guidance other than that.

I would say that Chris' hands were really good myself, and like with most judging it really does come down to personal preference once you get past technique.

However if you watch any of the male professionals from Saturday night they all have one or two fingers down (not at right angles but say around 20 degrees) so I think Len is wrong to criticise this - especially as it's effectively criticising Ola as Chris' teacher.

Leaderboard

So combined leaderboard is as follows:

Couple
Score
Ali Bastian and Brian Fortuna
60
Chris Hollins and Ola Jordan
56
Jade Johnson and Ian Waite
52
Ricky Groves and Erin Boag
47
Martina Hingis and Matthew Cutler
46
Lynda Bellingham and Darren Bennett
44
Rav Wilding and Aliona Vilani
41
Joe Calzaghe and Kristina Rihanoff
32

So Joe sticks to the bottom as I predicted and Ali manages to remain on top (although I think Chris' Rumba was better than Ali's she would still take top place over both dances in my book).

I'm afraid Joe that based on this weekend's performances I think you will unfortunately have to leave early, I just think there's more potential in the other dancers.

Almost back up to present time!

Nice start, looking good so far, and nice facial expressions.

Not too bad with the hips either.

I must say, Chris has surprised me with a very good Rumba!

I think that deserves 7-8.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan

Ok so it seems I was a bit too generous for the first week!

I get nervous everytime we start a new dance course so I'm sure Chris is sweating profusely!

Here goes:

Powerful though a little stompy and flat footed, think this will be another 5/6 though probably nearer 6.
