Rachel Stevens & Vincent Simone - Rumba

Rachel was one of the best female celebrity Rumba dancers I've seen on Strictly, and I'm looking forward to seeing their dance tonight.

Ah the pivot, ever an audience favourite, and well placed in a varied and sensual routine.

However during the lift at the end Rachel needed to put some shaping into her legs as they did look like they were just hanging there.

Technically the lift shouldn't have been in there anyway so I'll ignore it (seeing as the judges appear to be ignoring lifts too!) so will have to say potentially another perfect score.

Austin Healey & Erin Boag - Paso Doble

Austin performed an amazing Paso Doble in 2008's competition and I felt was very unlucky to go out without reaching the final.

Well that's a start and a half, though I'd prefer a more Spanish arm shape at times.

However a very entertaining performance (as Austin always managed) and a great aggressive performance. A 9.5 from me and I think might get a couple of 10's.

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Cha Cha Cha

I wasn't a big fan of their Cha Cha the first time round, though the judges seemed to really like it. Let's see if Ricky can change my mind.

Some of Ricky's forward locks are really good, and then some appear to have no hip action whatsoever, and he does need to look at those hands.

It still didn't wow me i'm afraid, but I can't really fault it too much, will give this a 9.

Both couple's Lindyhop

Out of the two of them I'd say in advance that Chris could well outperform Ricky in this dance - on a personality basis anyway!

Little stumble at the start from Ricky there. Chris does need to keep his head up though.

However Ricky can definitely lift Natalie easily over his head...up until that spin over the head.

Is it my imagination though or are Ricky and Natalie having more individual dance moments in the choreography?

An entertaining routine, shame Ricky very nearly had a disastrous drop.

It's difficult to compare between the two as Ricky and Natalie's routine appeared to have more content to it, and Chris did have the odd timing issue.

I'd give Chris and 8 and Ricky a 9 (though I might have to go back and count the on-screen couple-solos for both of them)!

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Rumba

I personally really liked Chris' Rumba back in his first week but there was still significant room for improvement, let's hope 10/11 weeks on has seen that improvement realised!

At times Chris' hands look really good, at others they are just stuck out, but thankfuly mainly there is some shaping there.

I'd like to see more hip action though, to match the sheer amount of chest on show.

He certainly acted a good Rumba, could still do with improvement though. I'd give him an 8.

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Cha Cha Cha

Not quite sure on the pants in the training Ricky…

Seems to be dancing more with his upper body than his hips early on and I do wish he’d do something with his free hand when it’s not in use.

I don’t feel like there’s as much choreography as I’d be expecting from these two either.

A bit of a letdown for me personally but should get at least 8’s.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Samba

Another Samba tonight, Ali scored well earlier on and it’ll be difficult to have such a direct comparison to her.

I think Bruno might mention the stamping jump at the start, and Chris’ mouth is making a comeback.

His hips are a little lacking but it’s a very good performance and I’ll give it an 8.

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke - Salsa

They’ve not impressed in the Latin so far this series, the training looks good but can they ‘bring it’ on the night?

Why Laila, why always the mistakes? Especially when you’re apart from Anton it just makes it so obvious.

Emma asked me yesterday my prediction for who was going out tonight, I predicted Laila last night and I stand by that tonight after seeing that performance.

Unfortunately Len’s right, they want to be in the final but they rarely manage a flawless performance and I can’t see them progressing further than tonight.

A real letdown and I’m going to have to say a 5 (possibly the lowest score I’ve given all series – I’ll have to go back and look!)

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - Samba

The bogey dance so far for most competitors, and I don’t think the Samba will prove to be her dance tonight either.

Still looks too ‘nice’ and on a couple of moves Ali doesn’t appear to finish before she’s on to the next step and really needs to dance from the floor.

I don’t think the choice of music helped, I do think Samba really needs to have a bouncy feel to it to really bring out the performance.

An ok performance but should get 8’s.

The moment of truth, dance off, and result

Is it unthinkable for Ricky Whittle to be in the bottom two...let's find out!

Still on target for a Ricky & Laila dance-off, but wait it appears Anton is more popular than Natalie.

I preferred Natalie's original Rock and Roll performance to Ricky's but I think it'll take a miracle for Natalie to be saved unfortunately.

Ricky's up first, and starts with what appears to be the same mistake he made the first time.

Still feels a little lacklustre, though Len might appreciate Natalie's pop-out!

Natalie's up next and still the same wonderful amount of energy, shame about the mistake with the through-the-legs manouvere.

Unfortunately I don't think there was much chance of Natalie staying in the competition out of the two of them, and I'd be surprised if it isn't 4-0.

...

...

Just waiting on Len to confirm it...

...

...

...and there's the confirmation.

Natalie Cassidy & Vincent Simone - Rock and Roll

So the cartwheel lift, and the rolly-polly are apparently out, let's see what's left for their routine

Sorry Ricky but already this has much more energy and fun than your performance - and there's a knicker shot for Len!

It actually seems a little too Jive'y in places but I'll give this an 8 too.

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Rock and Roll

Fresh from police questioning I had someone comment last night "I wonder if Ricky will be dancing to 'Jailhouse Rock'?"

I'm already scared from watching the training videos of the lifts!

I do wish Ricky would do something with his free hand, it does tend to just hang around.

Looks like a slight mistake at the start but Ricky appears to have recovered admirably.

For me the routine just appears to lack energy, which is surprising considering the content, and very nearly a bad slip-up at the end!

Should get 8's though.

Natalie Cassidy & Vincent Simone - Samba

When I saw the training videos mid-week she looked a little flat so i'm hoping Vincent's addressed that since.

Len will definitely appreciate them going straight into the dance.

For me i'd have Natalie take slightly more compact steps, this would help with the hip action. The bounce was improved over mid-week but I still think a little work is required.

A little uninspiring at times but ok overall. Only 7's for Nat this week I'd say.

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - Cha Cha

A perfect dance last week, sadly I don't think they'll perform quite as well this week - Ali hasn't performed well in the fast Latin dances so far.

The fringing is hiding the inadequacies in her hip action, and an obvious mistake in the middle.

Didn't really float my boat, but then pretty much what I was expecting from the performance.

Should score ok though and probably 7-8.

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke - Rumba

I thought their Paso last week was very good, and deserved higher marks than it received. Anton's Latin choreography has been a bit weak this series so i'm hoping we see some improvement in the content.

That foot/ankle injury is obviously causing Laila serious problems and the dance has definitely suffered.

I think they might let Anton get away with that lift this week!

The main problem is that Laila couldn't generate any hip action as it requires pushing into the floor.

So difficult to have any opinion on a score and there have to be a lot of generosity to get anything higher than a 6, unfortunately.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Paso Doble

So Chris gave his best performance last week, can he keep it up with the Paso this week?

Not sure on the facial expressions, but definitely an aggressive attacking attitude. I don't personally like all the jumping stamps but the ending was very good and generally very good technique throughout.

Easily 8's, maybe even a 9 or two.

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Jive

Can Ricky make it through this week's routine without making mistakes?

Lots of energy, though i'd prefer to see his feet come together a little more during the chasses.

Flicks are quick though the toes need to be pointed down during each kick.

Seemed to have lost stamina by the end though, not surprised with the speed and amount of choreography in the routine.

Should get 9's though.

Craig Kelly & Flavia Cacace - Cha Cha

It was Craig's dream to make it to Blackpool, and I think people voted for him because of that, but I don't think you're going to make it any further. Let's hope you prove me wrong with a good performance tonight!

At least you're enjoying yourself Craig, you look like a little kid in a toy shop - especially when you're on your knees looking up at Flavia.

Entertaining, for all the wrong reasons, and pretty poor I'm afraid.

You'll be lucky to get 6's.

Woah, that's quite a bitchy comment from Alesha there, she didn't need to be quite so harsh. Brucie makes Craig his 2nd favourite.

Phil Tufnell & Katya Virshilas - Rumba

This, I'm afraid Phil, could potentially be a disaster!

Needs to relax the shoulders right from the start. Looks to have lost his timing just before going into the sliding doors.

Hip action is ok but could do a lot more. Not a bad performance but I think only 7's though - apparently he's Bruce's favourite.

Judges scores: CRH 6, LG 8, AD 7, BT 7.

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke - Paso Doble

This should actually be a Latin American dance that Laila can cope with!

Smouldering start...but wait was that a lift?!!!

Excellent performance, not sure how the judges will feel about the lifts, though it did seem to lose drive as the dance progressed.

For me it would easily be a 9, if I ignore the lifts!

Judges scores: CRH 7, LG 7, AD 8, BT 8.

Anton, Anton, Anton...why did you do the lifts? You're not Brendan Cole!

Ricky Groves & Erin Boag - Salsa

Ricky could have some issues with this fast and complicated dance, but let's hope he puts on a good show.

Well it looks like the goldfish mouth is back with a vengeance, shame the hands are a little sloppy.

Some really complex arm movements there, shame about the mistake though.

Entertaining and I think deserves 30.

Judges scores: CRH 6, LG 7, AD 6, BT 6.

A little harsh I feel!

Jade Johnson & Ian Waite - Jive

Whilst Ian's certainly never had a problem performing a Jive (considering his height), Jade may find she struggles with the speed of movement required.

Looks to be a slightly flat beginning, but it's good to see her toes pointing down during the flicks.

Maybe I spoke too soon, when they're in their Lindyhop section her toes seem to be flicking around all over the place!

An ok performance but I expected better, should easily achieve 8's though.

Karen Hardy comes on and makes a comment about how although RW made mistakes he still kept his head up and looked confident throughout, Jade made no mistakes yet had her head dropped throughout most of the dance.

Judges scores: CRH 8, LG 8, AD 9, BT 8.

The dance off!

So who can impress the judges enough to make it to Blackpool?

First up Ali with her Paso Doble...and what's this no shoes? Which straight away results in a slip.

However I would say a much better performance than earlier on in the night.

How will Zoe reply to that?

No real improvement on her earlier dance, I didn't like it that much earlier and I think Zoe will be going home this week.

Ricky Groves & Erin Boag - Rumba

Ricky has consistently been the clown in the competition so far, but he can't really afford to be too funny in this dance.

The weight loss is definitely showing in Ricky now and he's looking good, though the hips are a little forced in that beginning, and still needs to watch his shoulders when in hold.

Not so sure on the arms being flung everywhere but a serious effort from Ricky. Not a bad performance I think and I would say yet more 7's (swiftly becoming a habit tonight!)

Zoe Lucker & James Jordan - Samba

I don't feel Zoe's performed particularly well during the faster Latin dances so it will be interesting to see how she copes tonight.

Looks to have been a slight mistake after the promenade runs, but so quickly recovered you probably wouldn't notice too much.

Her hip work just seems to be lacking for a great protion of the dance and I wasn't particularly impressed, more 7's I'm going to say but may get an 8.

Labels: , , , ,

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Cha Cha

Fast and cheeky, this could make or break Chris.

A bit too stompy throughout, needs to be softer and push through the floor, and Craig is definitely going to mention the 'banana' hands (as Emma's just described them!), he needs to make sure there is a some shaping in his hands.

Another round of 7's I would say.

Labels: , , , ,

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - Paso Doble

A slower Latin American dance (generally), Ali should fare better than her last outing in Jive.

Body shaping in training is looking really good, let's hope the stubbed toe doesn't affect the performance, though she looked a little 'off' coming down the stairs.

It's not a confident performance I feel, though the steps are generally looking pretty good - and there's no way i'd be able to do the splits!

Overall it just lacked energy for my liking, 7's again I think.

Natalie Cassidy & Vincent Simone - Jive

Natalie has her favourite dance this week, and some might argue the most energetic of all the dances!

Slight mistake with the hand changes at the start but certainly not lacking in energy. She does feel a little flat for my liking and really needs to do something with the arm that isn't in hold as she has a tendency to just leave it hanging.

An ok performance but I think the energy gradually dissipated as the dance progressed.

I think she'll get 7's.

Another good performance from Jade & Ian and a better one from Jo but still no contest between the two.

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke - Samba

An awful Jive last week could well have seen them leaving, but the public saved them - rightly so I think. How will the Samba compare?

Anton's very much a Ballroom boy so I wouldn't be surprised if he haad to pick up a few things from Laila.

A very funky routine and looking really good, up to the first travelling voltas that Laila unfortunately made a slight hash of.

Not their best dance, but not even close to their worst. I think it will get 7's.

Jo Wood & Brendan Cole - Samba

With one Joe going out last week will the other Jo survive tonight?

Mistakes abound and Brendan almost throws Jo across the room during the pivots at the end of the promenade runs.

I found it quite painful to watch i'm afraid Jo, but you did look like you enjoyed yourself tremendously.

This is going to be the bottom of the table i'd have thought, and lucky if she does achieve 5's.

Labels: , , , ,

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Samba

Although I don't agree with the 10 they received last week Ricky is still definitely the one to beat.

A little too feminine , with less hip action then i'd actually expect. Also steps were all wrong in the promenade runs.

Better hip action later in the dance but needs to avoid bunching his hands.

Not his best dance but will probably achieve 8's.

Labels: , , , ,

Craig Kelly & Flavia Cacace - Samba

Craig hasn't really managed a good Latin dance so far in the competition, and unfortunately I don't think Samba is going to be any different.

A very timid performance and lacking in the drive and energy normally expected in a Samba, though Craig does appear to be enjoying himself.

A few mistakes, and a lack of hip action will see this being lucky to get 6's I think.

Labels: , , , ,

Phil Tufnell & Katya Virshilas - Samba

So Phil's turn to try the Brazilian carnival dance, lot's of bounce and hip action required Phil!

Quite a fast track they've picked for this Samba and I don't think it's doing them any favours.

Absolutely no bounce and it looks very wooden except for the staged hip movement sections.

For me I'd have to say a 6 i'm afraid.

Jade Johnson & Ian Waite - Samba

So Ian has done well in the Samba in the past, let's see how they get on tonight.

Not sure how the judges will go but I think it'll be 8-9.

The dance off!

This really is going to be no contest i'm afraid Joe!

I can understand, I suppose, why Zoe might have ended up in the bottom two. I personally found it a little lacking in excitement and energy.

If you're going to be in a dance-off though you have to hope for Joe as your opponent.

Even though it's by far Joe's best dance I don't think there really was going to be anything he could do to stay in this competition at this point.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Jive

Another week, and another metre of clothing removed from Ola's outfit!

Best start for a Jive tonight...until the actual Jive dancing started - needs to keep his head up a little bit more and be a bit 'tighter' with his chasse and rock motion.

Looks very puffed out by the end of the dance.

6's with maybe a 7...

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke - Jive

So Ian told me that we really need to vote for Laila and Anton on tonight's show, and from the training videos I had to agree.

I only hope they've chosen a slow song...

...wise choice!

Poor Anton, there's a reason he (like I) were pre-determined to be ballroom dancers!

Not actually bad in places but there are some truly awful points.

I think we really could see a top one week, to bottom the next situation.

Looking at 5's as I predicted.

Joe Calzaghe & Kristina Rihanoff - Jive

I've predicted this could actually be Joe's best dance, and might actually pull him off the bottom of the leaderboard.

Shame Joe was so out of time on the flick ball-changes at the start as it wasn't looking too bad at that point.

No real bounce in the dance however but could achieve some 6's.

Craig Kelly & Flavia Cacace - Jive

Before I get onto Craig and Flavia's dance, I don't agree with Ricky's being a 10 Alesha, at least not if you haven't marked Jade's a 10 too!

Anyway, can Craig overcome yet another dance-off confidence shaker?

Interesting outfit Flavia...

Definitely energetic, though it looks a little loose, lacking in control and Craig's a bit ahead of the music.

Very stompy in the chasses.

Still think 6's.

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - Jive

Looked a little awkward in training and I've been waiting to see how Ali copes with these faster Latin American dances.

Looking good up until the mistake with the American spins, dance seemed to lose it as Ali's confidence dropped.

A good start but let down by the second half.

6-7 rather than straight 7's that I predicted before.

Phil Tufnell & Katya Virshilas - Salsa

Phil could've done with a Foxtrot to give his knee a bit of a rest...

Surprisingly good beginning and really nice hip movement and confidence.

A little bit basic at times, with a lot of repetition but that's most likely due to the reduced practice time they've had available.

Not a bad Salsa at all and I upgrade my predicted 6's to 7's after seeing that performance!

Jade Johnson & Ian Waite - Salsa

Jade injured herself during training and I hope it doesn't affect the performance too much tonight.

Based on the training videos I thought this could be 8's.

Energetic but seems a little lost at points. 7-8's.

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Salsa

Ricky could pull out another top spot, and take the glory from Anton, but I was only thinking 8's earlier.

The start is a little disjointed for me and just seems to be a collection of moves rather than coherent dance. Good hip actions though, shame about the hands not quite working in the between the legs drop.

Not as good as last week but I think it will still be 8's.

Natalie Cassidy & Vincent Simone - Salsa

Natalie's not afraid to shake it when required, I thought 7's earlier so let's see what she can produce here.

Definitely an energetic performance, though it looks a little laboured at times. Not entirely sold on the performance but think it will achieve 7's.

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - Salsa

I've been waiting to see Ali perform a quicker Latin dance as I think this is where she could fall down, however she has got Brian as her teacher and he knows a thing or two about Salsa.

Ali needs to push through the floor to generate the hip action and she looks a little uncomfortable. A very complicated routine though that she is pulling off with style.

I thought it could be 7's earlier, not so sure now so i'm going to say 6-7.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Salsa

Looked a little uncomfortable in training, let's see if Chris can pull it off on the night, predicted 6-7 earlier.

Really should lower those shoulders, I know the feeling he's trying to create, but it doesn't quite look right.

Slightly off on the turns but lots of hip action, does look a little forced at times.

Needs to avoid spreading all the fingers on his hands, at least have some shape there.

Overall a solid performance and should get 7's.

Training updates - Salsa and Foxtrot

In advance of tonights show I've looked at the training updates and my comments and predictions follow.

The contestants have been allocated either a sultry Salsa, or the elegant Foxtrot.

Salsa normally involves fast complicated moves with lots of hip movement, whilst the Foxtrot is a slow elegant dance that should float across the floor.

Both are quite difficult dances to master but I've always considered the Foxtrot to be the most difficult dance technically.

So how is their training coming along?

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan - Salsa

Need to keep the head up Chris, and the shoulders down. Having seen Chris' Rumba a couple of weeks ago I think this could be good, if he can just keep the performance element there.

For me though I think he could have another Quickstep moment, i.e. head down and just kicking like crazy! So I'm predicting 6-7.

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - Salsa

Salsa is Brian's forte so this should be good, if Ali can cope with the fast and intricate movements.

We've seen Ali perform two Ballroom, and one Latin dance so far. Ballroom is generally easier for the female celebrities and Ali also excelled in the slow Rumba, but how is she finding the faster Salsa?

I think this will be 7's

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Salsa

Ricky is fast becoming the series favourite, but is it too much too soon?

Needs to watching the arm that isn't being used and make sure that it's not just left hanging.

This is definitely a dance that could really show off Ricky's abilities, and word has it that Ricky has previously had Salsa lessons.

Just like his Paso last week, I think Ricky will really perform this well but I'm seeing 8's not 9's.

Jade Johnson & Ian Waite - Salsa

Jade injured herself in training midweek so it will be interesting to see how their routine has had to be adapted.

Definitely really good hip action and attitude, even if she does lack confidence. I'm predicting 8's for this

Natalie Cassidy & Vincent Simone - Salsa

Natalie showed in her Cha Cha that she's not afraid to wiggle her hips, let's see if she brings that confidence to the Salsa.

Looking at the training their Salsa is starting to shape up nicely and I think this will be 7's

Phil Tufnell & Katya Virshilas - Salsa

Phil had keyhole surgery on his knee this week, and I'm sure his recovery has seriously affected their available practice time. Let's hope for Phil's sake that his knee can hold up under the stress of performing a Salsa, he'd have been better off with Foxtrot.

Not looking good so far on the knee front, but most of the routine is looking pretty good. Unfortunately the effect of that knee is going to result in 6's.

Ricky Groves & Erin Boag - Foxtrot

Strictly's funny man returns after an impressive Paso, let's see if he can keep those shoulders down in the Foxtrot.

Really needs to avoid shrugging throughout the dance, if he can sort that then could be looking at 7's, but realistically I think it'll be 6's

Jo Wood & Brendan Cole - Foxtrot

Jo has struggled with the dances so far in the competition and I think this'll be another dance she struggles with as the ladies footwork is especially difficult in the Foxtrot.

Based on her previous performances she'll struggle to make 5's

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke - Foxtrot

What a turbulent week these two will have had! Laila has asked that the events of a couple of weeks ago be put behind them, but how will the public vote?

One of Anton's strongest dances and it looks like Laila's picked it up excellently.

Could be their best dance yet, and the best of the night, 8-9.

Joe Calzaghe & Kristina Rihanoff - Foxtrot

I can't work out which of the two dances would've been better for Joe, but I think probably the Foxtrot as there's zero hip action required!

Another dance where I think Joe will struggle to maintain his frame, and it looks like there are some issues with the relationship in training.

Sorry Joe but looks like you'll struggle to get 5's

Craig Kelly & Flavia Cacace - Foxtrot

Craig's grame is looking improved, though haven't seen enough of the dance out of practice hold.

I'm saying 6-7.

Lynda Bellingham & Darren Bennett - Foxtrot

Definitely lucky to have not been given the Salsa, let's see what she can do with the Foxtrot.

Looking very nice, though I can't see her footwork, definitely a dance best suited to Lynda's personality and style.

Could well be 7's.

Zoe Lucker & James Jordan - Foxtrot

If Zoe copes with the footwork this could be a really good Foxtrot, Zoe has an elegance when she dances that will really complement the Foxtrot.

If all goes to plan this will be 8's.

So my prediction is for Laila to be top, and Joe still rooted to the bottom of the table. Do you agree?

Salsa showdance & Andy Williams

Will have to look closely and decipher a few new moves to add to the repertoire.

Although I wasn't actually that impressed with the performance, I don't tend to criticise professionals but that did look a little amateur at times and I think slower music would've allowed for a better performance all round.

Andy Williams

A true legend, though I must admit I didn't realise he was still alive (oops!). Performing a wonderful Waltz song which we recently added to the Waltz playlist (on the request of a student).

If anyone else has any suggestions for good Waltzes, or any other dances, please let me know and i'll try and add them to the playlists.

6. 29 points - Ricky & Erin
7. 28 points - Natalie & Vincent
8. 25 points - Lynda & Darren
9. 24 points - Phil & Katya
10. 23 points - Chris & Ola
11. 21 points - Craig & Flavia
12. 20 points - Rav & Aliona
13. 20 points - Jo & Brendan
14. 19 points - Joe & Kristina

Given that Jo and Joe have both been saved by the audience from being in the bottom two it's fair to say that the same might happen this week.

This could mean that Rav and Craig both end up in the bottom two again, and I can't call it yet.

What's everyone elses viewpoint?

Ricky Groves & Erin Boag - Paso Doble

Facial hair seems to be a theme this week, let's see if Ricky can master the posture and lose the hips - save them for the other Latin dances!

He's certainly come out on the floor with the right attitude, not too sure about the scream though, is he in pain?

The trouble with wearing a bolero is that if you don't hold your frame correctly it will make your shoulders look hunched. I normally recommend my wedding grooms don't wear their jacket during the first dance for this very reason.

A lot of passion, albeit slightly poor footwork at times.

Based on the atmosphere he creates I'd give it a 7

Jo Wood & Brendan Cole - Paso

I had Jo down as the one to exit last week, let's see if she can repay all those people who voted for her.

Well definitely a better performance than last week, though needs to keep her head up, and her shoulders are a little off line at times.

Shame about the end being mucked up.

Think this will be 5's, but definitely an improvement.

Joe Calzaghe & Kristina Rihanoff - Paso Doble

The pre-series favourite sent the bookies laughing all the way to the bank in the first week. Paso however could be more his dance.

Interesting belt there Joe!

In Paso the man stands up straight with a slight curve outwards in the spine, Joe appears to be a little hunched over throughout.

Will definitely lose marks for lifting her, even if it wasn't intended as a lift.

Certainly a better performance than anything he brought to the floor in the first week, but lacked good posture.

Think it will be 5's, but may obtain a 6...

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Paso Doble

Marked as 'The One To Beat' last week, I wouldn't have marked him quite as highly myself but he's definitely the main contender, if he can keep it up.

Natalie looks a little nervous before walking out, but on the evidence of the first couple of moves I don't think there's anything to be nervous about.

A lot of passion and intensity and I must say a very impressive Paso performance so early in the series - helped by the quintessential Paso song.

This really could see the first 10 of the series but I think it will be a 9.

Natalie Cassidy & Vincent Simone - Paso Doble

A chance for Natalie to really get her acting skills out, if she manages to get over the nerves.

Dancing is exhausting, especially for those coming to the 10 dance recaps all next week!

Better Flamenco hands at the start than Lynda's effort.

Hands are a little high when coming across her chest at times.

Much prefer traditional Paso music, gives much easier and more dramatic highlights.

A very good Paso, and Vincent shows John Sergeant how you SHOULD drag a lady across the floor!

For me an 8, but I think it will be 7-8

Zoe Lucker & James Jordan - Paso Doble

Another top partnership back to dance again. Nice dress, now what about the dance?

Good shapes at the start and throughout, though really waiting for a big WOW moment, seems a little lacklustre.

I wonder if James grew the facial hair especially for the dance?

Hunched over at times but overall not too bad. Best Paso so far but still only a 7 for me.

Lynda Bellingham & Darren Bennett - Paso Doble

A dance that requires passion and performance. Cha Cha wasn't very good last time but this could be a lot better.

Classic dress design, not quite sure about the Flamenco moves to start with - too rushed to get the impact.

Lacks 'attack' and is a bit too soft for my liking but definitely better than her first two outings on the dance floor.

Think this will only get a 6 however.

Natalie Cassidy & Vincent Simone - Cha Cha

Confident in training and not afraid to move her hips around will be interesting to see whether technique is forgotten once the performance takes over?

Need to cross the legs during a lock step Natalie and the arms are a little flung out at points.

Lively in places but not inspiring, think this will be a 6.

Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe - Rumba

Hitchhiker! That's the word I was thinking of, still not good i'm afraid though Richard.

So, the girl's favourite is up next, and starts by flashing the torso to his fans!

Nice hip action but needs to sort the shoulders out - makes him look uncomforable.

Really good lines however and the only partnership to utilise the slightly faster/sharper Rumba speed.

Overall a good Rumba but only worth a 7 I'd say.

Richard Dunwoody & Lilia Kopylova - Cha Cha

I do think that could be the last time we see Jo (aside from the dance-off), as I'm not sure she's popular or well-known enough to get the audience vote.

Richard's shoulder injuries, and unfortunately obvious lack of rhythm, could be his failing in this Cha Cha - but at least he's trying hard.

Seriously out of time i'm afraid Richard, but at least you're enjoying yourself! Shame the hips are only showing an appearance now and then. Really not sure about the thumb-to-shoulder dance step.

Definitely tried hard but I think this will be a 5.

Jo Wood & Brendan Cole - Rumba

Jo lacked confidence in her Tango last night and the Rumba may prove to be a difficult dance too.

No action at all in her Rumba walks, and shame they got caught up together.

There wasn't much of an atmosphere between them and I think she'll get 5's if they're feeling generous.

Zoe Lucker & James Jordan - Rumba

I'm afraid I really don't think Laila's dance was worth a 7 Len, but everyone else agreed with my 6.

Zoe struggled during the week with the sensual side of the dance so will be interesting to see how she copes with the pressure of a live performance.

Needs to round her hip action out a little more, but not a bad start and a good performance all round, very intimate acting at the end.

Best performance so far and I think this could get 8's, maybe a 7.

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke - Cha Cha

Aside from a slight mistake last night, their Tango was good last night, so i'm hoping for good things with their Cha Cha.

Cheeky start, slight mistake with her timing creeping in and I don't think the judges will be so forgiving this time.

No real hip movement of life in the dance, probably lost all confidence with her early mistakes.

Predicted a 7 but think this will only manage a 6 at best.

Craig Kelly & Flavia Cacace - Rumba

During the week Craig's hips and arms weren't quite working in sync, let's see if a couple of days more of practice have helped.

Needs to have a fot transition between moves with the hands at the start, improved by the time he gets to the cucarachas.

No real connection or emotion in the dance between them though. Predicted a 6 and I think that'll be it.

Phil Tufnell & Katya Virshilas - Cha Cha

The Cha Cha's a cheeky dance so this could really suit Phil's personality, let's just hope his hips turn up too!

Predicted a 6 for this based on the mid-week training.

Not sure about the hands on the stomach at the start, or the little skip.

Needs to relax the shoulders a bit, and the hips are a little forced, but not bad. Do think it'll be a 6 though.

Training updates

So the night of the new celebrity competitors is almost upon us, and last night's It Takes Two had training updates, how is their training coming along?

Phil Tufnell & Katya Virshilas
Waltz - Needs to relax the shoulders, just holding his arms a little high (arms should be a slight incline down from the shoulder). Overall doesn't look too bad, if nerves don't get the better this could be a 6-7.

Cha Cha - Could potentially give Ricky Groves a run for his money...? If i'm honest I think Phil will only manage a 6 at best.

Zoe Lucker & James Jordan
Waltz - Looks elegant (when not falling over!). Definitely going to give Ali's Waltz a run for her money.  Could be a 7-8.

Rumba - Looks quite good, so long as Zoe can ignore her nerves surrounding the sensual side of the dance.  Another 7-8.

Jo Wood & Brendan Cole
Tango -  Needs to keep chin up, still closing up and looking at the floor.  Brendan always dances with passion so let's hope Jo can keep up.  Think the nerves might get the better of her though and predicting a 6.

Rumba -  A couple of nice moments but haven't seen enough of the dance to truly judge, think another 6.

Richard Dunwoody & Lilia Kopylova
Waltz - Needs to relax the shoulders, the frame is just there for show and should be kept uniform and relaxed. 5-6.

Cha Cha -  Oh dear, I don't think the Cha Cha is going to be Richards thing, looks uncomfortable and again another 5-6.

Craig Kelly & Flavia Cacace
Tango - Flavia's speciality is the Argentine Tango and Ballroom Tango is a close cousin so hopefully something good can be created here.  Right shoulder should not be raised during lines, needs to watch this. Predicting a 6.

Rumba - Hips look a little forced at times, probably going to be a 6.

Tango - Flavia's partner Vincent is also a specialist in Tango, coupled with Natalie's passion for dancing and her acting abilities, this should be good.  Haven't seen enough of the dancing but i'm predicting a 6-7.

Cha Cha - Natalie definitely doesn't appear to be shy about moving around in the Cha Cha but does need to make her chasse a little softer.  Should be a lively 7.

Waltz - Looking really good, though still needs to watch those shoulders and try and keep level. Going to say a 7-8.

Rumba - Has natural rhythm and looks quite good, a 7 easily if he pulls it off on the night.

Laila Rouass & Anton du Beke
Tango -  So finally Anton get's a younger celebrity and ,some might say, his actual real chance to win.  Can't see the feet but this could be the best dance of the night, 8.

Cha Cha - Nice hip action and looking good, think that'll be a 7.

Don't forget that our blog will be a little late tonight due to our regular Friday night practice session, but don't worry i'll be watching it, and commenting, as soon as I get home so check back after midnight!

Rumba walking...

Apparently Natalie Lowe's advice to Ricky Whittle, to perfect his Rumba walk, was to imagine he's walking down the street with change in his pocket and he's trying not to jingle it - will definitely have to test that one out!

I once read that the Rumba walk that we try so hard to perform, are natural to animals such as camels for example:

So guys, that's all you've got to aim for...!

Good question

After receiving the following comment on one of my previous posts, I felt it deserved a post of its own:

Hi Antony. One question after Saturday. Why did Len criticise Chris Hollins' hand movement for the New York in the rumba?

He said that for men, spreading the fingers and pointing the middle one down is "not a good look" and that they should keep the outer 3 digits bandaged together.

But that is how you teach and obviously Ola as well, since she took the blame for this on the show, so I'd be interested in your reaction ...

Thanks, Maggie

Personally I learnt the middle finger down, I teach guys to hold the middle two down – I don’t like the look of the three fingers together.

The Walter Laird technique book shows the middle finger down in the pictures, but there is no guidance other than that.

I would say that Chris' hands were really good myself, and like with most judging it really does come down to personal preference once you get past technique.

However if you watch any of the male professionals from Saturday night they all have one or two fingers down (not at right angles but say around 20 degrees) so I think Len is wrong to criticise this - especially as it's effectively criticising Ola as Chris' teacher.

The dance off!

Both dancing a Rumba, this makes comparison a lot easier!

...

Rav first...

A better performance I think than earlier on and hips are working better than earlier (though not always in the correct direction!)

...

Now Martina...

Just feels like there's more emotion in those first few steps than Rav's whole dance.  Taking slightly smaller steps now which is helping (wonder if she saw the blog!)

Loss of balance there as she gets carried away, let's hope that doesn't ruin her chances.

...

Will the judges base on both dances, or just the dance off?!  For me i'm afraid it has to be Rav still to go.

The moment of truth!

Well done Ian (still not biased!)

Joe's through, unlucky for the bottom two couples I don't think they deserve to be there.

Bottom two therefore are:

Rav Wilding and Aliona Vilani
Martina Hingis and Matthew Cutler

Based on Latin performances I think Rav will be going out i'm afraid.

Ricky Groves & Erin Boag

I think Ricky's personality will come through in the dance, but there might be problems from the waist down.

...

Stompy but certainly lots of personality, though I feel like my eyes have been burnt by the hip thrusting at the judges.

Not bad forward walks but again another celebrity who has to learn to use the floor better - not easy though and that will hopefully come with more practice.

...

Overall a lively performance let down by slightly rigid and legs and feet.  I think this will be a 6.

Martina Hingis & Matthew Cutler

...and now I'm back in time with the live show!

...

Rumba I think will work for Martina but she will need to use her core ab muscles better tonight.

...

Not too bad to begin, still needs to use the floor better - and maybe take smaller side steps in the Cucaracha's.

Hands not too bad but need work.

Make sure your weight is over the foot when moving.

I think this will be a 6-7

Joe Calzaghe & Kristina Rihanoff

Hmm...Joe Calzaghe and Cha Cha...

Could be good personality-wise but I need to see some hips to be convinced!

...

Need to loosen up Joe and weight over the balls of your feet.  Don't throw the arm back in the New Yorks.

I'm afraid there aren't many hip actions being shown here and I think this is going to be 4-5.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan

Almost back up to present time!

...

Nice start, looking good so far, and nice facial expressions.

Not too bad with the hips either.

...

I must say, Chris has surprised me with a very good Rumba!

I think that deserves 7-8.

Rav Wilding & Aliona Vilani

Rumba is always a difficult dance for the boys, trying to move the hips whilst still looking manly.

...

Needs to be softer in his walking and give his hips a chance to actually work, though not too bad in places.  Lines are rushed at times.

Another 5-6

Not sure if i'd have marked 8 for Ali & Brian's Rumba, but then that's why i'm writing a blog and not judging!

...

So a cheeky Cha Cha in store hopefully!

...

Unfortunately no real hip movement, needs to use the floor a little better (hip movement is generated by pushing into the floor).

Should be dancing on the balls of the fleet and seems flat at points.

...

Admittedly not as good as Ali's Rumba so I suppose I might have under-marked, but I think this will be a 5/6

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna

So Rumba, a chance to be elegant but how are her hips going to perform?

...

Lots of throwing arms out, is she trying to hide something in the beginning?  Looks unsure and really needs to finish her hips (Rachel Stevens was very good at this).

A little too much posturing and not enough basic but good acting at the end.

Think this'll be a 6

Sorry i'm a little bit late starting tonight guys - had to finish preparing my dinner so it could cook during Strictly.  It's ok though as I paused the program so i'm hoping i'll be able to catch up quite quickly!

Here goes:

Cha Cha definitely likely to suit Jade more than the Rumba

...

Hips are a little forced, needs to loosen up.  Also need to keep the head up.

...

Energetic performance but I think a 6

3 hours to go

So 3 hours to go before the contestants are back to dance Latin, what am I expecting? (Please note that all pictures below are property of the BBC and links will take you direct to the couple page)

Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna - Very nice and elegant Waltz last night, could struggle if she's been given a Cha Cha, might be able to pull off an acceptable Rumba but I think she's too shy at present to really use the hips.

Lynda Bellingham & Darren Bennett - I hope for Lynda's sake she has a Cha Cha tonight as I think she could perform a very cheeky Cha Cha, with the Rumba it would be interesting to see how Darren choreographs another (mature-ish) celebrity routine - after failing with Gloria Hunniford in Series 3.

Joe Calzaghe & Kristina Rihanoff  - Disappointing performance last night (though I must admit it always surprised me that he was the bookies favourite).  I think his Latin tonight will be clunky and awkard - sorry Joe, please don't hit me!

Ricky Groves & Erin Boag - Good performance just suffered from nerves and tightness in the shoulders, however I think Ballroom will be his forte.

Martina Hingis & Matthew Cutler - If she'd just stood up straighter (brought the rib-cage up and strengthened her core muscles) her Waltz would've been a lot better.  I think she could do quite well in the Latin but she will need to perform more.

Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan   - Poor Chris, second on the table last night but I think his flat-footed approach to the Tango will spill over into whichever Latin dance he does tonight, I'm afraid i'm not expecting good things - let's hope i'm wrong.

Jade Johnson & Ian Waite - Tall is always good when it comes to Ballroom but most people find it a hindrance in Latin - there's just too much body to move around, not that that's ever stopped Ian!  Jade, I think, will struggle with controlling her body during the Latin, and needs to avoid flicking her hands once extended.

Rav Wilding & Aliona Vilani - Too muscly I think to portray either Latin dance effectively, but could be wrong - just look at Austin Healey last year.

My prediction for tonight is between Ali and Martina for top spot (dependant on dances allocated to each) and Joe to stay fixed to the bottom and I think he'll be relying heavily on audience votes.

But as always we will just have to wait and see how the dances get allocated tonight, and i'm sure there will be at least a few surprise performances in there.

Do you agree with what i've said above, or how do you see it going?  Please feel free to leave your comments below by clicking on "comments" and posting your message there.

Round-up and group mambo

So my scores varied a little from the judges but I think the leaderboard so far is a fair reflection.

Alesha performed well for her first time judging, though I was sceptical about her comments at first.

...

Who's good and who's not...

Phil's making a few mistakes and getting caught up but seems to be enjoying himself
Ricky can't quite seem to keep up with the footwork at points.

...

WOW, that flip over the head didn't half give me a scare - thought she'd been dropped!

...

So, i've tried my best - now to see if anyone was actually reading - please feel free to leave comments about any of these entries and let me know if you'd like me to continue with this blog?!
